A Friendship that Stands Clear

November 20, 2014

We can measure our time together in decades now,
But we don’t.

Too many miles in between short us,
And the world conspires to cheat us of the things that matter.

Years of joy and faith together,
Bring us to the here and now.

Decades together,
Prepare us for this moment to share.

Loyal friends since the grade school playground. I don’t recall if we caught our share of fish that foggy North woods morning, but I guarantee that we had one heck of a time.

I received this photo a long time ago. Here is the inscription on the back:

Rhinelander, Wisconsin
1978

The picture’s a little blurred, but so are many things in life. I’m glad of a friendship that stands clear.

Everyone I’ve ever known has wished me well
Anyway that’s how it seems, it’s hard to tell
Maybe people only ask you how you’re doing
‘Cause that’s easier than letting on how little they could care
But when you know that you’ve got a real friend somewhere
Suddenly all the others are so much easier to bear

  4. Very well said, Bruce. I have several friends now that date back to over 40 years, one from the first grade. The special times form a rich tapestry, worth much more that material items. –Curt

    • I don’t remember whose boat that is. No Minnesota photos. Whatever I had were lost that awful day. You saw most, if not all, of the photos that I have.

  15. Well Bruce, I always say a true friend is God sent. Although there are some struggles with everyone we meet. But its worth it when we are able to be respectful and be understanding towards others in spite of their shortcomings and still be their friend. Great post sir!
